Bare Necessities

As we enter the last week of the Sun in Taurus, Tuesday we receive a new moon in Taurus. So, this stabilizing earth energy is here to stay.  Earth energy brings us back to our bodies, the physical, the essentials of every day life: food, rest..our surviving. As I talk to many of you, I hear you share physical experiences of the energies of this time through discomfort in your body, or feeling the need to rest and not feeling the normal zest to "go go go" like the Aries energy provided. You may be experiencing a need to get yourself in order and deal with the basics. You may feeling the need to take care of your finances,  assessing how you are spending your time and the routines that govern our life. Medically Taurus rules the neck and I have certainly had that part of my body speak to me this last month. That is the beauty of earth, it brings us back to the here and now and what we can actually see, touch, hear, smell and taste. We can live in our heads for only so long before the body protests and asks us to attend to the part of us that is actually here physically. This new moon is a time to bring it back to the basics and to attend to the part of us that when left unattended will stifle any growth and unfolding of plans we are making in our dreams.

Taurus time has been a time to work in the garden of our lives. We have been asked to pause and note what are we watering and growing in these gardens.  Did we mean to plant what is there? Are we taking the time and energy to ensure that what we want to grows has the attention is needs to survive and even further..thrive? Are we tending to the weeds that enter when we "fall asleep at the wheel", getting to busy with the other things? Are we just assuming that someone else is attending to the garden in our absence? Did we delegate the important task of our self-management to others, and if so, how do we know they align to what we value and can we really trust this with someone else and honestly why would we? Don't they have gardens of their own to tend to?

These are all important questions for reflection as Saturn joins Pluto in Capricorn, calling for us to mature, evolve and face the consequences of our choices. Are we being aware of what is transpiring in our life and assuming responsibility for our choices? If we are not then we may be facing a reality that seems not so inviting and  challenging. Where has our experience been a wise counselor for us offering us a pathway towards our embodied wisdom? If we pay attention, life will give us all the answers we seek. They are not found in others or in sources outside ourselves. If we can slow down and reflect on our journey we realize that all we need to do is pay attention to what is in front of us and what preceded its arrival to know where we are headed and why we got here in the first place.

This time has been rich with reality that it is the simple things that can stop us in our tracks on our way to where we think we want to go when we don't bring our bodies with us. In a culture that teaches us to reside in our minds and to keep our minds fed it is all too easy to ignore the very basics of our existence. We can have so much access to information now without ever leaving our home. We can "google" any topic and get tons of information about any topic instantly. We have access to so many opinions, methods and processes to do anything, create anything and be anything. This can be wonderful but it can also be a trap. A trap to suppress the wisdom and necessity of caring and listening to our bodies and our internal guidance. We can burn the candle at both ends for a while until our body says "enough!". We can seek, communicate, fill our minds to the brim until our body screams loud enough that we must interrupt our searching to handle the "annoyance" of what our bodies need. We  can make the only language of the body, pain or illness. I don't feel the body has only one way to speak but when we never give it a chance to communicate then like a bottled up toddler it is going to make a scene.

The body has so much to share with us. It can give us information about our safety, it can tell us we resonate with our choices, it can alert us to when we are expending more energy than we are taking in, it can tell us if the sources of our nutrients are beneficial or missing the mark. It can tell us when we need to move, when we need to rest. It can tell us if something is pleasurable. This information is vital to the necessities of life. We cannot thrive and reach our potential when we are working from an empty or vacant vehicle. We will trip on ourselves as the simple things will cause us to stumble. All the while, we will miss an opportunity to develop the language of our body as an base layer of intelligence from which to operate from in our day.

I often find that we are seeking to evolve and to awaken to higher layers of consciousness without first having the most essential layers of our being well functioning. Think of it like trying to go to college without completing primary school. You must learn to read and write before you learn higher mathematics and sciences. And these base skills serve us well for all of our life. Our body wisdom is just that valuable.

So, on this new moon I feel we are invited to check in with where we are investing our time, energy and resources. Do they align with our values? An on a deeper level, are we taking care of and listening to the vehicles of our spirits, our bodies? Do we nurture our bodies as they are our own internal gardens? Can we slow down enough to hear the messages of our bodies? Can we apply as much zest to the bare necessities of life and take pleasure in the simple act of living? On this new moon, take a pause. Get still. Find an outlet for pleasure in the simple things. Enjoy a good meal. Take a walk and smell the flowers. Take a nap. Turn off your cell phone. Enjoy some silence. Listen and see what has been waiting to be heard because it whispers in the breeze.

From the Jungle Book: Bare Necessities"

"Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature's recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life

Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
I couldn't be fonder of my big home
The bees are buzzin' in the trees
To make some honey just for me
When you look under the rocks and plants
And take a glance at them fancy ants
And then maybe, well, try a few
The bare necessities of life will come to you

Looking for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
That's why a bear can rest at ease
With just the bare necessities of life"
